Ballarat Heritage Awards announced

The Ballarat Heritage Awards were announced at a formal awards ceremony on Friday 11 May .The Awards were presented jointly by the City of Ballarat and the National Trust of Australia (VIC). 
Congratulations to the following Commerce Ballarat members, Finalist category Creative Re-use of a Heritage Place: Gove Cycles and BRACE Education Training and Employment. Well done!

Alcohol and cannabis are the drugs of choice for Ballarat’s youth, according to a welfare leader in the city. And a huge binge-drinking culture in the city was only exacerbating the problem, said UnitingCare’s chief executive Cliff Barclay. CEO of Child and Family Services in Ballarat, Kevin Zibell, also believed Ballarat was heading in the right direction to help the city’s youth, particularly with such programs as Strengthening Generations offering drug and alcohol education.


The Ballarat economy is expected to be given a massive boost ahead of Mother’s Day this weekend as sons and daughters flock to the shops to buy their mums lavish gifts. Commerce Ballarat executive officer Jodie Gillett said Mother’s Day was one of the busiest times of the year for Ballarat retailers. "Mother’s Day always provides a boost especially in flowers, as well as mum being taken out for lunch and enjoying the hospitality industry," she said.

Hundreds of people got a chance to tread the boards at Her Majesty’s Theatre yesterday as part of Ballarat’s Heritage Weekend. Her Majesty’s opened its doors in 1875 as the Academy of Music.

Funding cuts to TAFE could spell the death of thriving regional towns like Ballarat, an education researcher has said. University of Ballarat associate dean Professor Barry Golding said he was concerned about the "many negative and likely long term consequences" of the Baillieu government’s recently announced cuts to TAFE.

 

Friday 18 May

Between them, Claire Thorpe and Margaret Moran have accumulated nearly a century of service to St John of God Hospital. The two nurses, who received their training from St John of God Nursing School in the 1960’s are now stepping into retirement - Ms Thorpe after 49 years and Ms Moran after 46.


Ballarat Grammar student Josh Wimbury said meeting a politician face-to-face helped him see the human side of politics. The 17-year-old was one of the many year 11 students who heard Liberal Senator Michael Ronaldson speak yesterday.

Modern retail award appeal dismissed - varied shifts for students allowed

The Federal Court has dismissed a union appeal against a variation of the modern retail award that will allow school students to work shifts of less than three hours, opening up part-time employment opportunities, especially after school hours.
